Technical Writing Tips

There are many types of writing, such as creative writing, technical writing, and copywriting. The style and purpose of technical writing makes it different than other types of writing. Check out the tables in "Avoid These Technical Writing Mistakes" by Robert W. Bly for examples, and go to the Writing Center for help!

Technical writing should

•Aim to educate and inform
•Be objective
•Be geared to a specific audience
•Use formal language
•Be systematic and sequential
•Be concise
•Use an active voice
•Use short words

 

Technical writing should not: 

•Express opinions
•Use slang
•Aim to entertain
•Be ambiguous
•Use a passive voice
